By providing a welcoming atmosphere for them upon arrival, they will feel less alone and be able to adjust to life in Canada more quickly. Choosing to stay with a homestay family also allows them to improve their language skills outside of the classroom and live like a local. Their stay is also an opportunity for you and your family to learn more about their culture and language. You will earn an extra monthly income, benefit the local economy, and make a real difference in someone’s life.
How do I know if it’s right for me?
If you are curious about hosting an international student, great! But it’s important to ask yourself a few questions before you make the commitment.
Are you able to create a welcoming and safe environment? You will need to provide a bedroom, 3 meals a day, and have the patience and understanding required to host a new guest in your home.
Do you have the time? If you are away from home a lot, this may not be the right choice for you. Speaking of time, make sure you are clear on how long you are willing to commit.
How does the rest of your family feel about it? Having your spouse and/or children on board with becoming a homestay family is important. Everyone needs to be involved in the decision and feel comfortable having someone new in their home.
Is it safe to host an international student during the pandemic?
Yes! There are currently very strict rules for international students entering Canada. They will not be staying with you until all required COVID-19 tests have been administered and they have quarantined for the appropriate amount of time.
