Program Outline
Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of computing, including computer hardware, operating systems, networking infrastructure, IT technical support and security concepts.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Install and configure hardware and software components of computer architecture
2. Configure a variety of operating systems
3. Explain the hardware and software components of a network, including the Internet
4. Apply the fundamentals of IT technical support concepts and practice to manage hardware and software resources to meet organizational and end user requirements.
5. Discuss a range of security concepts, tools and techniques
6. Explain the hardware, software, and operating system components of a computer
Students will demonstrate awareness of appropriate professional, legal and ethical practice as an emerging IT professional, communicate and work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Discuss legislation that relates to the Information Technology industry
2. Explain the importance of ethical behaviour and evaluate the main ethical considerations facing Information Technology professionals.

Students will be introduced to computer programming.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Compare and contrast a range of design principles
2. Create, debug and test simple programs using fundamental programming constructs, principles and tools
3. Work with both procedural and objected oriented methods
4. Demonstrate understanding of the objectives, people involved, tasks and deliverables of each stage in the systems development life cycle.
5. Use a variety of number bases such as binary, decimal and hexadecimal
Students will gain experience in working with PC hardware, networking, laptops, printers and operational procedures.

Students will gain an understanding of core database administration concepts, manipulate data and administer a database. They will develop a broad knowledge of virtualization and cloud computing, as well as an operational knowledge and understanding of IT service management.

1. Understand and apply database management system (DBMS) concepts to administer a database
2. Create queries to manipulate a database
3. Apply DBMS optimisation, security and backups
4. Discuss virtualisation and cloud services
5. Discuss the role and responsibilities of the IT support team
6. Understand how IT service management operates within an established framework
Students will gain an operational knowledge of the installation and configuration of a directory service.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Analyse and plan a directory service to meet organisational requirements
2. Implement and manage a directory service
3. Write scripts to manage a directory service
Students will gain knowledge of the major aspects of routing and switching to design, install, configure, and operate LAN services for small and medium sized networks.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Apply advanced switching techniques to troubleshoot and resolve switching issues
2. Configure VLANs to isolate traffic
3. Apply routing techniques to maintain networks
4. Apply routing protocols to implement networks
5. Analyze and design an IP network to implement an organizational network.
Students will learn specialized knowledge and application of aspects of routing and switching so as to be able to configure, analyze, and troubleshoot LAN and WAN services for small and medium sized networks.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Implement routing and switching configurations to maintain networks
2. Use troubleshooting techniques to resolve routing and switching issues
3. Analyse networking scenarios to recommend remedial actions
4. Create technical documents
5. Analyse LANs and WANs to support IT infrastructure
6. Design and implement LANs and WAN
Students will learn specialized knowledge of device security, network management, and network planning so as to be able to manage and protect small and medium sized networks.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Configure traffic filtering to protect IT assets
2. Implement advanced network and mitigation techniques to secure assets
3. Apply knowledge of Cloud Computing and SDN
4. Design and document network requirements to support network planning
5. Monitor networks using appropriate tools
6. Design and implement security for a medium sized network
Students will develop specialized knowledge and application of wireless networking.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Apply advanced wireless techniques to resolve networking issues
2. Apply protocols and technologies to configure wireless networks
3. Design and implement a wireless network
To give students specialised knowledge and application of unified communications and network convergence.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Analyse the impact of convergence on a network
2. Implement unified communications
3. Design and implement unified communications to meet organisational requirements.
Students learn the knowledge and skills to secure LANs.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Configure firewalls and VPNs to protect IT assets
2. Explain network threats and mitigation techniques
3. Analyse and implement network security to meet organisational requirements
4. Analyse threats using appropriate tools
5. Configure secure routing and switching
6. Design and implement advanced network security for a LAN
Students will develop knowledge and skills to use a project management methodology in an IT service management framework contextualized to the content of the program.
Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Apply IT service management using an established framework to meet organisational requirements
2. Apply software licensing and compliance procedures
3. Apply project management planning, management and control techniques to solve business problems
4. Apply critical thinking and business skills to analyse an IT related project
5. Create a project plan.
Program Requirements
All students are required to meet the following admissions requirements:
- Graduation from Grade 12 or equivalent (B.C. high school diploma, B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma, General Educational Development) or an equivalent secondary school completion from another jurisdiction; or
- Mature student status (19 years of age or older before the start of classes). Mature students will be interviewed by the Program Administrator to determine if the student has the appropriate level of literacy, numeracy, comprehension and/or written skills to enable successful completion of the program. Applicants may be required to submit a resume, school transcripts and/or letters of recommendation.
- If English is not the first language, students are requested to have one of the following to qualify for enrolment to this program
- IELTS score of 6.0 or an equivalent English language benchmark verified by the institution
- For domestic students, Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status is required. International students are required to possess a valid study visa, for programs longer than six months and prior to the program start date. International students are also required to have sufficient accident and medical insurance coverage to cover any injuries or illnesses that may occur during the educational term.
